Kristen Clarke joins HUSL Community

Dean Roger A. Fairfax, Jr. is thrilled to announce that Kristen Clarke, former Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Justice, has joined the Howard University School of Law community for the Spring 2025 semester. She will conduct research and engage with the Howard Law community on racial justice and civil rights, particularly around intersections with technologies such as artificial intelligence.
Clarke, who led the Civil Rights Division during an incredibly productive period from 2021-2025, has dedicated her career to public service, mass impact litigation and civil rights advocacy. She previously served as president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. She also worked at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and led the Civil Rights Bureau for the New York State Attorney General’s Office. A Brooklyn native, Clarke is a graduate of Harvard College and Columbia Law School.
Former Assistant Attorney General Clarke’s extensive experience in civil rights law and leadership will enrich the HUSL community, help equip students with the knowledge and tools to navigate emerging legal challenges in the field and contribute to our ongoing commitment to uncompromising excellence. This fellowship is supported by the Howard University School of Law Dean's Innovation Fund and a gift from Microsoft focused on fostering engagement around emerging technologies and racial justice.
