Kristen Clarke Appointed Earl C. and Anna H. Broady Chair at Howard University School of Law

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Howard University School of Law announces that Kristen Clarke, former assistant attorney general for civil rights at the U.S. Department of Justice, will join HUSL as the Earl C. and Anna H. Broady Chair for the 2025-2026 academic term, teaching both the Civil Rights Clinic and a doctrinal course in civil rights.

The Earl C. and Anna H. Broady Chair honors the legacy of Earl C. Broady, a prominent Los Angeles judge, and his wife, Anna H. Broady. It is awarded to an influential leader in the legal field whose work in advancing justice and equality strengthens the national and global reputation of Howard University School of Law.

Clarke has built a nationally respected career as a champion for civil rights and social justice. As head of the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice, she led efforts to enforce anti-discrimination laws, protect voting rights and advance police accountability. Before her confirmation, she served as president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. She also led the New York State Civil Rights Bureau and served as an attorney with the NAACP Lega Defense and Educational Fund.

Dean Roger A. Fairfax, Jr. remarked “We are thrilled that Professor Clarke will contribute to the academic and public service mission of Howard Law through teaching, mentoring, and public engagement. Her career and commitment to justice align powerfully with HUSL's mission of training social engineers to serve the public interest, and her appointment affirms the law school’s commitment to preparing lawyers who are deeply engaged in the pursuit of justice and equity.”

“The challenges that we face in our democracy today make clear the need for strong, strategic and fearless lawyers committed to using the law to stand up for those most vulnerable among us,” Professor Clarke said. “Howard University School of Law continues to be one of the nation's leading training grounds for lawyers committed to vigorously safeguarding our civil and constitutional rights. I am honored to join Dean Roger Fairfax and the law school in fulfillment of this critical mission.”
