The Judicial Externship helps students develop practical competencies associated with judicial clerkships and manage their learning goals outside of the classroom. It is ideal for any student with an interest in clerking after graduation. Like all externship seminars, a central component of this class is reflection, including on substantive course content and on general issues such as access to justice and bias in the legal profession.

During the Summer term, students must spend a minimum of seven weeks at their placements.

In addition to working for the minimum number of weeks, students must work for the following minimum number of hours during the relevant term, depending on the number of credits they register for. The minimum hours are:

  • 4 credits: 165 Hours
  • 6 credits: 275 hours

Students receive one graded credit for the work in the required, weekly externship seminar and pass/fail credits for their field placement work. For example, a student registered for four credits will receive one graded seminar credit and three pass/fail field placement credits. Students must pass both components (seminar and field placement) to receive any credit for the externship.
