Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcome 1 

Demonstrate foundational knowledge and understanding of substantive and procedural law. 

Measures

1. Students will receive a passing grade in the first-year core legal curriculum. 

Students must take and pass: Torts (3 credits); Legislation and Regulation (3 credits); Civil Procedure (3 credits); Contracts (5 credits); Property (3 credits); Criminal Law (3 credits) 

Target 

80% of students will pass all courses. 

2. Students will take and pass courses geared for the bar examination. 

Students are required to take, in addition to the first-year course curriculum, Evidence, a subject tested on the bar examination. Students must pass Evidence to graduate.

Learning Outcome 2 

Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively in the legal context in writing and orally. 

Measure

1. Legal Writing 

Students will take one year of Legal Writing in the first year; one semester of legal writing in the second year; and take one advanced legal research and writing seminar. Students must take and pass all the legal writing curriculum requirements in order to graduate.  

Direct - Exam (Certification/ Licensure) 

Target 

All students will take and pass all legal writing subjects, including obtaining at least a 75 grade on their advanced Legal Writing 3 paper. 

Learning Outcome 3 

Demonstrate legal research, legal analysis, legal reasoning and problem-solving skills. 

Measure

1. Legal Research and Writing Lab 

Students will take one year of Legal Research and Writing Lab, which focuses on research skills. Students will produce at least one upper-division piece of well-researched work product. Students must successfully complete the year of Legal Research and Writing Lab. Students must take one upper-division advanced legal research seminar.

Target 

All students will successfully complete the above requirements, earning at least a 75 on the advanced research paper.  

Learning Outcome 4 

Demonstrate the ability to exercise proper professional and ethical responsibilities to clients and the legal system. 

Measure:  

1. Students will take one course of Professional Responsibility. 

Students must take and pass a Professional Responsibility course to graduate.

Law LLM Learning Outcomes 

Learning Outcome 1 

For foreign law graduates, to achieve an understanding of the U.S. legal system. 

Measure: 

Domestic Law Class 

For foreign law graduates to successfully complete the course titled “Introduction to the U.S. Legal System”. This requirement is waived for graduates of American law schools.

Target 

The course will cover the foundational components of the U.S. Legal system. 

Learning Outcome 2 

For foreign and domestic law graduates, to achieve specialization in a distinct area of law, including but not limited to public international law, private international law, human rights law and civil rights law. 

Measure

Course Requirements 

LL.M. students must successfully complete 24 semester hours (credits) of coursework and a graduate thesis writing requirement. LLM candidates take an array of course work and participate in the same courses that are available to all JD students.

Target 

LLM candidates pass at least 24 credit hours of course work during their course of study. 

Outcome 3 

For foreign and domestic law graduates, to demonstrate deep knowledge and sustained research regarding a focused issue of law. 

Measure: 

Thesis 

The writing requirement is a graduate thesis of three, four, or five credits that is supervised by the Director of the LL.M. program, or with the Director’s approval through an independent study with an identified faculty member. The writing requirement may also be satisfied through the completion of two written papers in seminar courses.
