The Advanced Public Interest Externship Program is for students who have already successfully completed another externship course. Generally, students are encouraged to pursue a different placement  for their second externship. Students who wish to return to the same placement must submit an explanation through the application detailing why 1) their learning objectives cannot be achieved in a doctrinal or other experiential course; and 2) how their learning agenda differs from their first term at the placement.

Students must complete a minimum of eleven weeks at their field placements during the Fall and Spring semester or seven weeks during the Summer term. Students must also work for the following minimum number of hours during the relevant semester/term:

  • 2 credits: 55 hours
  • 3 credits: 110 hours
  • 4 credits: 165 hours
  • 5 credits: 220 hours
  • 6 credits: 275 hours

Students receive one graded credit for the work in the required, weekly externship seminar and pass/fail credits for their field placement work. For example, a student registered for four credits will receive one graded seminar credit and three pass/fail field placement credits. Students must pass both components (seminar and field placement) to receive any credit for the externship.
