The Corporate Counsel Externship is for students placed in positions in corporate counsel’s offices. The seminar focuses on the role of corporate counsel, including but not limited to, ethical issues relating to the representation of a corporation, conflicts and their waiver, confidentiality, and compliance. The seminar also focuses on the role of lawyers in advising corporate boards and officers with regard to their fiduciary obligations, and corporate governance issues. Additionally, the seminar discusses the development of effective communication and leadership traits in a corporate setting. The seminar course further discusses new issues corporations are facing today that corporate lawyers are expected to deal with and advise their clients.
Students must complete a minimum of eleven weeks at their field placements. Students must also work for the following minimum number of hours during the relevant semester/term:
- 3 credits: 110 hours
- 4 credits: 165 Hours
Students receive one graded credit for the work in the required, weekly externship seminar and pass/fail credits for their field placement work. For example, a student registered for four credits will receive one graded seminar credit and three pass/fail field placement credits. Students must pass both components (seminar and field placement) to receive any credit for the externship.
