Howard Law Celebrates Support Staff On Administrative Professionals’ Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 22, 2020) —National Administrative Professionals’ Day is today, and Howard University School of Law is honored to celebrate its own. 

With a team of seven, Howard Law bonds together with the rest of the country to recognize the administrative assistants and other administrative support professionals who keep the various law school offices running smoothly every day. 

“The law school’s administrative professionals are at the heart of everything we do at the law school,” said Danielle Holley-Walker, Howard Law dean and professor of law. “They make sure every aspect of our work is completed well, including room scheduling, planning and executing events, keeping in touch with alumni, and making sure students and faculty feel at home.”

Office of the Dean

LaShawn D. Reeder

Administrative Assistant

Length of time employed as an administrator: 15 years
Length of time as an administrator at Howard Law: 2013-present
What you like most about your role: Daily interaction with students, staff, and faculty

Shalonda Colbert

Special Assistant to the Dean

Length of time employed as an administrator: 23 years 
Length of time as an administrator at Howard Law: 10 years 

Major tasks:

  • Assist the Dean with administrative duties and special projects
  • Coordinate the Dean’s activities and travel
  • Work closely with the Dean and Development to coordinate outreach and fundraising events


What you like most about your role: “Being a part of the amazing Office of the Dean team, which consists of Dean Danielle Holley-Walker, Ms. LaShawn Reeder and me,” Colbert said. “We all work very well together as a team.  I enjoy getting to know and working with Howard University School of Law Alumni and planning different Howard Law events.”

What you like most about working at Howard Law: The family atmosphere, and how everyone is ready, willing and able to assist with completing projects and the overall mission of Howard Law.

“The administrative professionals I work with are extremely well organized, courteous, creative, and professional,” Dean Holley-Walker said. “Every day is made brighter through my work with Ms. Reeder, Ms. Colbert and the other administrative professionals at the law school. I am truly grateful for their dedication to the law school.”

Office of Academic Affairs

“I am eternally grateful for everyone on my Academic Affairs Team,” said Mariela Olivares, associate dean for Academic Affairsand professor of law. “Raaechael Johnson did the hero's work of all three jobs (and did it well!) before she moved into her well-deserved position as Director of Records. I am so appreciative of Raaechael's incredible work ethic and unflappable positive demeanor. It's no wonder that our students love Ms. Johnson!

Brittaney Caudle

Enrollment Specialist, Office of Records
Length of time as an administrator: 13 years

What you like most about your role: Student interaction

What you like most about working at Howard Law:The family feeling you see amongst everyone

“We were so fortunate to welcome Ms. Brittaney Caudle as our Enrollment Specialist this year,” Olivares said. “Ms. Caudle jumped right into her job, doing a fantastic job while putting her organizational mark on our efforts. Not to mention the candy basket in the newly-opened Records Office! I am so excited to see even more of what Brittaney can bring to our group.”


Coviece Marshall

Academic Affairs Coordinator

Length of time as an administrator: Almost 16 years
Length of time as an administrator at Howard Law: 3 months

 Major tasks:

  • Aid in supporting the daily operations of the Office of Academic Affairs
  • Serve as administrative assistant to Dean Olivares
  • Provide additional general clerical support as assigned

What you like most about your role:  The balance of documentation handling with student/staff/faculty interfacing.  

What you like most about working at Howard Law:The opportunity to work daily amongst so many aspirers and achievers 

“Ms. Coviece Marshall is my office admin-- but is basically my organizer-in-chief twin! I could not be MORE excited to work with Coviece. She is one of the most efficient, hard-working, and positive people I've had the pleasure to meet. I know that, like the rest of the dynamic members of team, Coviece will make her important mark on our office and on Howard.

Office of Administration & Operations

Tiffany T. Harris

Administrative Coordinator

Length of time as an administrator: 15+ years
Length of time as an administrator at Howard Law: 5 years

Major tasks:

  • Assisting with planning various events 
  • Processing requisitions/vendor payments 
  • Moot Court travel arrangements

What you like most about your role: Interaction with the students

What you like most about working at Howard Law: Working with Dean Waterman. She is a wonderful boss and role model. 

“Much of the service that the Admin & Ops team provides is collaborative and well behind the scenes,” said Ann-Marie Waterman, assistant dean of the Office of Administration & Operations. “An integral part of that performance is Tiffany Harris. We have worked together in seamless fashion for a decade and, in all that time, I have been professionally and personally grateful for the level of professionalism, effectiveness, and thoroughness that she affords me, our team, and the HUSL family. Thank you, Tiffany, for all of the innumerable and sometimes unmentionable things that you do to ‘make it happen.’ To the entire admin staff at HUSL, thank you. Know I appreciate you all more than I can articulate here.”

Chinelle Mitchell

Faculty Services Assistant 

Length of time as an administrator: 6 years
Length of time as an administrator at Howard Law: 1 year, 4 months

Major Tasks: 

  • Coordinating faculty travel
  • Exam administration
  • Managing OSCAR recommendation fulfillment 

What you like most about your role: Being part of the Admin & Ops team

What you like most about working at Howard Law: Directly contributing to the progression of the Black diaspora by supporting our students and faculty


“Chinelle doesn’t get rattled easily, always has a joke or a good story to lighten the mood and makes being at being the epicenter of all things faculty a lot less challenging,” said Donnice Butler, director of the Faculty Services Center. “On top of that, Chinelle is a style chameleon and I look forward to seeing what color her hair will be every week.”

Office of Student Affairs

Kimberly Salters

Student Affairs Administrator

Length of time as an administrator at Howard Law: 1 year, 5 months
Length of time working at Howard University:4 years, 5 months

Major duties: 

  • Direct the workflow of the office. Develop and implement office procedures and practices. Manage and monitor student workers, assigning various tasks and activities. Provide direction to clerical staff to coordinate administrative procedures within the department and/or among other offices.
  • Create and host events, pathway programs, presentations, orientation and graduation for students, faculty and staff. 
  • Assist with necessary needs for students under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which include but are not limited to proctoring exams, advising, directing students to correct parties and much more. 

What you like most about working at Howard Law:“I love being a part of the Howard University community and working with such amazing students, faculty and staff,” Salters said.

“Kim is such a pivotal part of our office, and I couldn’t do it without her,” said Adrienne Packard, director of Student Affairs. “She’s always willing to pick up and take on any project and is a reliable colleague and friend. I appreciate her tremendously today and every day.”
