Howard Law Celebrates Life of Retired Professor Richard Thornell


WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 30, 2020) – Howard University School of Law celebrates the life of retired Prof. Richard Thornell, who died Tuesday from complications related to COVID-19. Thornell served as professor at the law school from 1976-2004 and served as Howard University’s general counsel and head of the Faculty Senate. He was 83.

Donald A. Thigpen Jr., a Howard Law alumnus and close friend of Thornell, said that he“was a very popular professor whose never lost his interest in the lives of his students.”

Thornell’s major teaching responsibilities at the law school were the Torts Law Sequence, Advanced Torts, Environmental Law, and International Law.
