Essay Contest. The Association for the Study of African American Life and History, founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, invites graduate and undergraduate students to enter its Fifteenth Annual Essay Contest. Essays may be on any substantive aspect of the 2004 theme, Brown v. Board of Education. Essays must be between 15-35 double-spaced, typed pages. $1,000 and $500 dollar awards will be made in each graduate and undergraduate category to the top two essays. Complete instructions and contest rules are explained on the ASALH's website, http://www.asalh.com/. Essays are due by June 15, 2004.

NPR Brown programming - December 2003
A Nation Acts - this is a national effort to have the play "Now Let Me Fly" performed around the country. For information about doing it or observing it, please check its website at http://anationacts.brownvboard.org/ . The play is "based on hundreds of oral histories and personal interviews" and "brings to life the real stories and real people" behind Brown v. Board of Education.

January 31, 2004, Thurgood Marshall Center Trust, "Night of Brown v. Board of Education: 50 Years Later"
The Thurgood Marshall Center Trust is hosting of a black tie awards dinner celebrating the 50-year anniversary of Brown v the Board of Education by honoring the late James Nabrit, Charles Duncan, Jack Greenberg, Oliver White Hill, Ronald L. Carter, Constance Baker Motley, and William Coleman. This event is a kick-off to America’s annual celebration of Black History Month in February. Invited guests include representatives from the White House, Democratic Presidential candidates, Congressional Black and Hispanic Caucuses, the chair of the American Bar Association, civil rights icons, historians, and the shapers of tomorrow’s public policy.
Proceeds from this black tie celebration will go toward keeping open the doors of what began as the nation’s first black YMCA and has become a social service, recreational, and educational epicenter serving more than 2,000 economically and academically disenfranchised African American and Hispanic children, youth and families.
HUSL Dean Kurt Schmoke, among others, is an Honorary Committee Member for the event.
